in-service inspection and testing (formally PAT testing)

🔌 PAT Testing Legislation in the UK Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) isn't a legal requirement in itself—but it's a widely accepted way to meet your legal duties under several UK safety laws. Here's how it all fits together:

📜 Key Legislation

  • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 Requires electrical systems and equipment to be maintained to prevent danger
  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 Employers and landlords must ensure a safe working environment, including electrical safety.
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) All work equipment must be suitable and maintained in a safe condition.
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 Employers must assess risks and take appropriate precautions.

✅ Is PAT Testing Mandatory?

No law says you must PAT test. But these regulations require you to maintain electrical safety, and PAT testing is one of the most effective ways to demonstrate compliance.

👥 Who's Responsible?

  • Employers
  • Landlords (especially for furnished rentals)
  • Self-employed individuals using electrical equipment
  • Managers of public buildings like schools, hospitals, and hotels.
